TARPAULIN blue PEOPLE. Conversations in tarpaulin factories, in shops, on markets, and at nomad camps in Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Pune, India.
Cheap labour, cheap resources, cheap land - An artists inquiry into the hidden roots of one of her signature props.
The artist takes the viewer to factories where the iconic blue tarpaulins that have characterised her work since 2014 are produced. Marie Julia Bollansée traced the origins of her blue, Tarpaulin blue. But first of all, she wanted to meet the people who manufacture her blue tarpaulins.
With a keen eye and an empathetic camera, Bollansée examines both the production process and the lives of the people who make these plastic tarpaulins. In the factories she meets both, managers and labourers. The images and conversations reveal the difference in daily living conditions, education, background. And their diverse wellbeing, endeavours and desires.
Bollansée also meets nomadic construction workers who live in tarpaulin tents. Lowly paid, without any security or safety, moving their ‘home’ from one construction site to the next.

This research on blue tarpaulins exemplary exposes the mechanisms of a global system. Cheap consumer goods and the huge profits associated with it are enabled by cheap labour, cheap resources and the neglect of nature. WHAT’S YOUR NAME? is a poignant reflection on the human condition under neoliberal capitalism. Tarpaulin blue is now, the era of the Capitalocene.

TARPAULIN blue PEOPLE. Gesprekken in tarpaulin fabrieken, in winkels, op markten en in nomadenkampen in Ahmedabad, Mumbai en Pune, India.
Goedkope arbeidskrachten, goedkope grondstoffen, goedkope grond - Een kunstenaarsonderzoek naar de verborgen wortels van een van haar signatuur rekwisieten.
De kunstenaar neemt de kijker mee naar fabrieken waar de iconische blauwe tarpaulins worden geproduceerd die haar werk sinds 2014 kenmerken. Marie Julia Bollansée ging op zoek naar de oorsprong van haar blauw, Tarpaulin blue. Maar bovenal wilde ze de mensen ontmoeten die haar blauwe dekzeilen vervaardigen.
Met een scherp oog en een empathische camera onderzoekt Bollansée zowel het productieproces als het leven van de mensen die deze plastic zeilen maken. In de fabrieken ontmoet ze zowel managers als arbeiders. De beelden en gesprekken onthullen de verschillen in dagelijkse levensomstandigheden, opleiding en achtergrond. En hun uiteenlopende verlangens, ambities en welzijn.
Bollansée ontmoet ook nomadische bouwvakkers die in tarpaulin tenten wonen. Ze worden slecht betaald, hebben geen enkele zekerheid of veiligheid en verplaatsen hun ‘thuis’ van de ene bouwwerf naar de volgende.

Dit onderzoek naar blauwe tarpaulins legt op exemplarische wijze de mechanismen van een mondiaal systeem bloot. Goedkope consumptiegoederen en de grote winsten die ermee gepaard gaan, worden mogelijk gemaakt door goedkope arbeidskrachten, goedkope grondstoffen en de verwaarlozing van de natuur. WHAT’S YOUR NAME? is een aangrijpende reflectie op de menselijke conditie in het neoliberale kapitalisme.
Tarpaulin blue is nù, het tijdperk van het Kapitaloceen.
